Where ever you are I trust you are having an enjoyable summer holiday though I have spotted a few chilly temperatures in the Southern Hemisphere! Based in France, I whole heartedly appreciate this time of year – les Grandes Vacances or the long holiday which seem rather like the end of the year. Schools close until early September, likewise clubs and societies whilst services simply evaporate. This could be construed as frustrating, but by adopting a similar pace and heading for the countryside, life is a slow paced pleasure.

For the last several years my family and I have headed to the ancient village of Bouisse, tucked away in the rolling hills of les Corbiéres in south western France. What impressed us from the beginning was the warm welcome extend to all foreign and French visitors alike and how naturally inclusive the annual fetes and festivities are. Set in Cathar country, an hour from the Mediterranean coast and served by a choice of lakes and rivers for swimming, I strongly recommend a visit to those who have yet to experience this area of rural France.

Though a time of pure relaxation I do have two fabulous books which I am delighted to be able to share with you – Bill Granger’s Every Day and Fish Cook by Aldo Zilli. Both, with their straight forward, tasty, sunshine recipes are my summer 2009 cookery companions. I trust these reviews and their sample recipes will bring a warm glow into your summer, whatever your weather!

Happy cooking and kind regards,

Fiona

About the author:

I am a freelance Home Economist currently based in Paris, qualifying at the Totley Thornbridge college of Home Economics in Sheffield, England plus teacher training at King Alfred’s College, Winchester.

Work has been varied and interesting. I fondly remember my time with Family Circle magazine during my initial studies which, under the watchful eye of Pam Dotter, the then Food Editor, and fun loving Mitzie Wilson (recent editor of Delicious magazine), became and still remains my source of inspiration for recipe development and food writing.

My first full-time job was as manager of the Patisserie Section in the grand London store, Fortnum & Mason, gaining invaluable food retail management experience as well as involvement with F&M's flamboyant catering activities.

After this I worked with multi-national General Foods followed by Kraft Foods (which, incidentally, are now the same company) until deciding to undertake teacher training. This perfectly complimented my industrial Home Economics background and provided a wealth of opportunity for work, where ever our expatriate years lead us, teaching children as young as 4 years of age through to adults of quite unquestionable age.

Since leaving the UK in 1993 I have lived in Scandinavia and Europe and currently live in Paris, France with my husband and 2 children where my time is divided between teaching, recipe development and testing, food writing and cookery demonstrations.
